Illustrating Art,
Inspired by the Great Wildlife
For many years, I have honed my skills in visual art. There were a few things that became my solid foundation in establishing myself. This includes the wildlife, my hometown, my family and mentors. The way to success was not easy, but throughout my life, I was able to seek company from art and the people I treasure the most.
The Journey of Young Denise
My childhood revolved around my exploration into the 100 acres of land surrounding me. Playing on the mudflats of Puget Sound and being blessed with a loving family who encouraged arts and crafts. My youth was definitely a fun time in my life.
My Parents
My father was a graduate of Masters of Science in Agronomy. With his passion and knowledge about the land, he diligently taught me about the plant kingdom. Both of my parents were avid scuba divers, so I was introduced to the wonders of the sea. I am thankful because my parents have taught me to have high work ethics, commitment, and the confidence to do anything.
At some point in my life I discovered creating art made me feel better, and propelled me into all forms of art. It became my medicine as I pushed through chronic illness. Art made my life brilliant. The deep artistic inspiration of creation brings forth life.
My aunt and uncle were professors of art and professional artists in their own right. As my mother continuously reminds me, my maternal side has a long history—from piano makers to hat designers, sculptors to painters. This family history has pushed me in the direction of different artistic expressions, like painting and music.
In addition to art, I do other activities such as playing the Native American flute and violin as well as massage therapy practice. As a holistic healer, I deeply connect and move a client's energy. As a musician, it is a connection with the energy that “wants to be heard”. As a painter, it is about conveying the magnificent force of nature and it’s wild beings. It is, and has always been, about energy and connection.
My Music
The use of the Native American flute brings me to my own unique voice. It is delicate and articulates, as if the flute itself is whispering to me.
Debut and Public Presentations
My public performance debut happened at the Hualapai Indian Reservation in the Grand Canyon’s Native American Cultural Performance Center. It was truly an amazing experience. Since then, I have been a frequent public performer at various venues and events such as the Arlington West Memorial and Veterans for Peace events. In addition, my music has been featured in the movie “Soul Dance.”
Let Me Know Your Thoughts
I hope you find a resonance of the truth and honesty with the wild animals I paint and be inspired by the music that I make. For questions, comments, and suggestions, please send me a message.
